ENERGY GLOSSARY / ALL TERMS ↗

Markets and prices

What does unit rate mean?

The unit rate is a price related to the amount of energy consumed, for example in cents per kilowatt-hour. The tariff, offer and bill determine which cost components it includes.

The data basis, contract scope and distinction from related terms are essential for applying this to a portfolio. A low unit rate alone does not make an offer cheaper overall. Equally, an already included cost component must not be added twice.

PROPERTY PRACTICE

What does this mean for your portfolio?

Compare unit rates only where their scope is the same. An energy-only price cannot be directly compared with a price including network charges and levies. For budgeting, multiply expected volume by the applicable price; additional fixed and capacity-related components are added separately.

An example.

Our own example: 100,000 kWh at 12 ct/kWh equals €12,000 for the specified price component. A standing charge is included only if the specific presentation expressly states this.

Simplified example to explain the term. Actual metering data, the supply concept and agreed terms are decisive.

WHAT MATTERS

Three questions for your portfolio.

01

Which components does the stated price include?

02

Are the unit and reference volume correct?

03

Which additional charges apply?

Make the distinction clear

Distinction from capacity and standing charges: a low unit rate alone does not make an offer cheaper overall. Equally, a component already included must not be added twice.
