Markets and prices
What does capacity charge mean?
A capacity charge prices the power demand relevant for billing, often in euros per kilowatt per year. It relates to power, not the sum of kilowatt-hours consumed. The applicable billing rules determine which power value is relevant.
The data basis, contract scope and distinction from related terms are essential for applying this to a portfolio. A low unit rate alone does not make an offer cheaper overall. Equally, an already included cost component must not be added twice.

PROPERTY PRACTICE
What does this mean for your portfolio?
Review demand peaks and the relevant price schedule together. Lower annual consumption does not necessarily reduce the capacity-related component proportionately. What matters is which peaks or agreed capacity values are actually used for billing.
An example.
Our own example: a relevant capacity of 80 kW at an illustrative annual charge of €100 per kW produces a cost of €8,000. Energy consumption is priced separately through its own components.
Simplified example to explain the term. Actual metering data, the supply concept and agreed terms are decisive.
WHAT MATTERS
Three questions for your portfolio.
Which period and price schedule apply?
What causes the decisive demand peaks?
Make the distinction clear
Distinction from unit rates and standing charges: a low unit rate alone does not make an offer cheaper overall. Equally, an included cost component must not be added twice.
