Data and metering
What do kW, kWh and MWh mean?
The kilowatt (kW) is a unit of power. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) and megawatt-hours (MWh) describe energy quantities. One megawatt-hour equals 1,000 kilowatt-hours. Power combined with time gives an energy quantity.
At constant power: energy = power × duration. With changing load, the contributions from individual time intervals are added together. Procurement and reporting require both a value’s unit and its period.

PROPERTY PRACTICE
What does this mean for your portfolio?
A heat pump with a specified electrical power input does not consume the same energy in every hour. Likewise, an office building’s highest measured demand is not its annual consumption. Convert euros per MWh and cents per kWh to a common unit before assessing price differences in offers.
An example.
Our own calculation example: equipment draws a constant 20 kW for five hours. This equals 100 kWh or 0.1 MWh. An illustrative energy price of €120/MWh equals 12 ct/kWh. The energy component for these 100 kWh is €12.
The example values are not market prices. Efficiency, variable operation and other price components are excluded from this simple calculation.
WHAT MATTERS
Three questions for your portfolio.
Have offer values been converted to the same unit?
Are peak demand and annual volume assessed separately?
Make the distinction clear
kW/h is not a substitute for kWh. Likewise, a PV installation’s rated capacity in kWp must not be equated with its actual annual generation in kWh.
